🎙️ Why Can't It Be You?
Episode #292 of Here's What We Know
PGA Tour Veteran Jay Delsing on Golf, Grit, Pressure, and Why You Should Aim for the Top
I was thinking about something Jay Delsing said on the podcast. Actually, that’s not true. I’ve been thinking about several things he said.
That’s usually how it goes when I spend time with someone who has lived a LIFE.
Jay Delsing played professional golf for 25 years. Think about that for a moment. Twenty-five years of airports, hotel rooms, practice rounds, missed cuts, pressure-packed putts, and waking up every day knowing that if you don’t perform, you don’t get paid.
Most people see the highlights. They see the trophies and the championships. What they don’t see are the thousands of days that came before them. The work, the disappointment, and the moments when quitting probably sounded pretty good.
One thing I’ve noticed about successful people is that they usually don’t spend much time talking about success. They talk about the process, they talk about showing up, and they talk about getting back up after things don’t go their way. Jay reminded me of that.
We spent time talking about Tiger Woods, the PGA Tour, and some incredible stories. Those were fun. I could listen to those all day.
We also talked about raising kids. About encouraging people to dream bigger than they think they’re allowed to. About why failure isn’t something to fear.
I loved hearing Jay talk about telling his daughters, “Why can’t it be you?” That’s such a simple thought, but it’s a powerful one.
Why do we assume someone else gets to have the big dream? Why do we decide we’re not qualified before we’ve even tried? I think most of us do it more than we’d like to admit. Maybe that’s why this conversation resonated with me.
Life asks a lot of us. Sometimes we get the outcome we wanted. Sometimes we don’t. But I’ve found that the people I admire most keep showing up anyway. They keep taking their shot. They keep believing there’s still something worthwhile ahead.
This week’s episode of Here’s What We Know features Jay Delsing, a former PGA Tour professional, broadcaster, author, and one of the most thoughtful guests I’ve had the pleasure of sitting down with.
Whether you love golf or have never picked up a club, I think you’ll find something in this conversation. Because in the end, it isn’t really about golf.
It’s about the choices we make, the risks we’re willing to take, and having the courage to believe that maybe, just maybe, the opportunity you’re looking at belongs to you too.
I hope you’ll give it a listen.
